Illustration is a challenging profession, and it’s not uncommon to experience burnout, difficulty concentrating, or prolonged periods of feeling uninspired. Even highly successful designers have their moments of low motivation.

To succeed in the field of illustration design in the long run, it’s crucial to establish healthy habits that keep you creative.

Therefore, we’ve compiled a list of 7 design habits that can transform how you work and help you make a smart designer.

Only some designers find creativity easily, but anyone can cultivate the habit and become a designer.

Even Edward de Bono said "There’s no doubt That creativity is the most important human resource of all. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns."

1. Observe the surroundings

To be truly creative, it’s essential to be observant. However, if you're constantly busy with tasks like designing, working, meeting, and cooking, it’s likely you won’t have the opportunity to pay close attention to your surroundings.

Notice as many details as possible to improve your attention to your surroundings. Take time to observe the people, objects, animals, plants, and buildings in your surroundings.

Experiment with varying locations each day, beginning at home, and then exploring an office, park, mall,
Grocery store, or a nearby landmark. Pay attention to small details.

2. Sketch what you observe daily

Stay observant throughout the day by noticing things. Stay mindful of the present moment and sketch your observations in your sketchbook. This habit will definitely make you a smart designer.

Recall the things you observed, did you see something specific? Perhaps a particular color, size, and shape caught your eye?

Where was the object located, and how was it positioned relative to other objects?

Who was there? What were they wearing? what were they doing? For example, a tea stall, or a vegetable shop.

Recall everything and try to design in a different way. By doing this you will notice that this habit you creative faster.

3. Make reading a habit

Perhaps you’ve heard or read that "reading enhances both memory and cognitive abilities."
Reading enjoyable books is a great way to maintain your reading habit and become a lifelong reader.

Even if you only have 5-10 spare minutes, make it a daily habit to read a book. Anchor your reading to a routine activity such as having a cup of coffee or food. Reading before bed is also a great way to cultivate this habit.
Consistency is key, so try to read at the same time every day to condition your brain to recognize that time as your designated reading time.

Create a list of books you desire to read. Having a variety of books to read makes it easier to sustain a reading habit.

4. Learning something new

Engaging our minds with new and diverse subjects provides a welcome distraction from our daily concerns. Learning something new, whether as a hobby or professionally, can benefit one's career.

Even just a 15-minute rest can work wonders.
